Literary reportage of Petra Procházková: The execution is a public matter and Adžamal

The bachelor thesis deals with the literary reports of Petra Procházková The execution is a public matter and Adžamal. Its goal is to analyze both texts and find in them the signs of literary reportage. The work also attempts to outline the reasons that lead to the fact that literary reportage is almost non-existent in the Czech Republic. The first chapter focuses on the characteristics of the reporting genre, its origin and development. It also deals with fiction and objectivity in reportage texts. The second chapter briefly describes the current state of written reportage in Czech print and online media. The third chapter is dedicated to literary reportage, attempts to define it, outlines the phenomenon of the Polish school of reportage and also touches on the current state of literary-journalistic texts in the Czech Republic. The second part of the thesis begins with a chapter on the life of reporter and humanitarian worker Petra Procházková. The fifth chapter focuses on the description of the context of the creation of her literary reports, specifically on the situation in Chechnya (where The execution is a public matter takes place) and Afghanistan (the scene of Adžamal) at the beginning of the 21st century. Literary Reportage with a Focus on the Theme of the Loss of Loved Ones in Selected Works

This diploma thesis is devoted to selected literary reportages focusing on the theme of the loss of a loved one. The genre which does not properly belong to either fiction or non-fiction has been growing in popularity in recent years, yet it is still a vague term for many. The thesis approaches the phenomenon of literary reportage, characterizes it and presents its main features. It also focuses on the history of Polish reportage as well as the current state of the Polish school of reportage in connection with the authors of selected works. Subsequently, it also provides a theoretical basis for the loss of a loved one using professional publications. In the second part of the thesis, the focus is on an interpretation of selected works - Ganbare! Workshops on Dying (2016, translated in 2017) by Katarzyna Boni, Like Eating a Stone (2002, translated in 2017) by Wojciech Tochman and Two Sisters (2016, translated in 2018) by Åsne Seierstad concentrating on the concept of loss of loved ones, and finally the thesis is devoted to a mutual comparison of three reportages to demonstrate the way of writing about the loss of a beloved person.

Narrative methods in literary reportages of Wojciech Tochman

In this thesis I deal with three literary reportages from the collection Pánbůh zaplať by the Polish journalist and writer Wojciech Tochman who represents the Polish School of Reportage. These are the reportages Člověk, který vstal z kolejí, Vzteklý pes and Mojžíšův keř. I focus on what kind of narrative techniques Tochman uses in the process of writing reportages, what kind of function they have and if the usage of these narrative techniques influences the trustworthiness of a literary reportage. In the case studies I analyze every reportage with the help of a one chosen narrative technique. In the reportage Člověk, který vstal z kolejí I focus on the narrative gaps, in Vzteklý pes I deal with the usage of focalisation and in Mojžíšův keř is the main focus the storytelling through characters. Literary analyses show that the narrative techniques are used for better coherence and impresivness of Tochman's texts. These techniques help to express experiences of described characters and allow an independent interpretation to the reader. They are also used as references to important social phenomenona which enable to Tochman to bring universal testimony about the subjects of literary reportages. Original literary reportage and its theoretical definition

This thesis compiles the phenomenon of literary reportage, also known as the Polish School of Reportage. In theoretical level, it compares literary reportage with conventional reportage and including this key differences defines the genre. It also follows history of reportage by connecting it with literary and journalistic tradition, while focusing on specific development in Poland. Examples of contemporary literary reportage in Poland and in the Czech Republic are included as well. Furthermore, the thesis covers the question of fiction and fictional narrative in the genre, it applies theoretical knowledge of narratology and considers the significance of fiction in literary reportage. The second part of the thesis is original reportage picturing the return of wolves into Czech nature.

Contemporary literary reportage and its evolution in the Czech republic, Poland and France

The dissertation deals with the evolution and current state of literary reportage in the Czech Republic, Poland and France. It puts literary reportage in media context with emphasis on history of the genre and its main representatives, it maps the current state of literary reportage in selected countries, authors, and themes of their texts. It analyzes the factors that affect the work of literary reporters.This thesis in its theoretical part relies on academic publications about the genre of reportage in each state in relation to Polish School of Reportage and its attributes. It also examines the usage of fictional components that affects trustworthiness of literary reportage. The practical part of the thesis is then dedicated to analysis of the reportage Spánek do oběda a zábava do rána by polish reporter Lidia Ostałowska in order to show what kind of impact literary techniques can have on form and content of reportage. To do so, it uses the method of narratological analysis and the concept of narrative gaps. In the end, the findings from the field of the genre are applied in my own authorial reportage called Nantes. Voda, plyn a oheň.
